When Black Belts with the World Tang Soo Do Association are ready to test in their attempt to
promote to a higher level, they bring years of training to the table as they push their limits
both mentally and physically. They endure a difficult written and physical test that lasts 4-5
hours. On Friday, April 25th, Misty Harmon Robbins(2nd Degree Black Belt /WTSDA
Certified Instructor) and 3 Instructor Trainees Tyler Randolph(1st Degree Black Belt), Bill
Bates(Black Belt Candidate) and Katie Cagle(Black Belt Candidate) all from East MS Tang Soo
Do Karate brought their "A" game before a testing panel of Masters (Black Belts 4th Degree
and higher) from several states in the region.
Although they will test many times in their martial arts career, this test was very special.
They were testing in honor of Misty's 8 year old daughter who is battling a life threatening
illness called Fanconi Anemia. After 2 failed bone marrow transplants in the past year, Misty,
her husband Scott, Natalie, and baby brother Aidan leave this week for the Minnesota
Children's Hospital for a 3rd procedure. Although each instructor had a personal goal to
obtain, but they also had a common thread that bound them together in brotherhood and
spirit. Before the test, the testing candidates and the other students that came to cheer them
on, placed a large "TEAM NATALIE" banner at the judges's table and they all wore "TEAM
NATALIE" banners on their belts.
They were tested on physical fitness and endurance, forms, weapons, sparring, and board
breaking and they all did an amazing job. Although they are instructors, they are still
students and they have worked long and hard to obtain their goals for which I am very proud
of them. Misty even brought home the coveted "Best Test" Award for the Region. However, we
are most proud of their team spririt and their brotherhood. They gave Misty so much love
and support and she will carry this with her to Minnesota for an even bigger battle of courage
and endurance. Much harder than the one they all endured Friday night. God has blessed our
studio with an amazing group of people for which we are very proud of.
