EAST MISSISSIPPI TANG SOO DO first began martial arts classes in Amory, MS in October
2000. EMTSD was originally located at the Gilmore Hospital Sports and Wellness Center, holding
classes two nights per week in the aerobics training room.
In January 2002, after increased enrollment made the smaller facility inadequate, EMTSD moved to
229 N. Main Street in downtown Amory. By the end of 2006, enrollment increased drastically and
we once again found ourselves looking for even more room to grow. We found this new space with
the purchase of a building at 109 N. Main Street. With over 6,000 square feet, it is the largest
martial arts training facility in Northeast Mississippi. This gives students more floor space to achieve
their martial arts and physical fitness goals. EMTSD is committed to serving the students and
prospective students of North and Eastern Mississippi with the highest level of skill and knowledge
of traditional martial arts training.
We are the ONLY TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS program in this area.
Being a member of the World Tang Soo Do Association, one of the largest martial arts organizations
in the world, you are assured of receiving the most professional training by our staff of Certified
Black Belt instructors. These instructors must complete a minimum of 100 hours of Instructor-
Training, assisting other certified instructors before they are tested to become official Certified
Instructors with the WTSDA. After the trainee status is complete, all Black Belts must attend a
mandatory annual Black Belt Training clinic to further enhance their training AND teaching abilities.
To obtain the rank of Black Belt, a student must have trained for a minimum of 3 to 4 years, rising
through the gup (colored belt) ranks until they reach the blue belt rank of Cho Dan Bo, or Black Belt
Candidate. The candidate must train for an additional one year, preparing for the Black Belt test.
The preparation includes teaching duties, advanced training, attendance at the annual Black Belt
Clinic, completion of a 1000 word essay on a topic related to Tang Soo Do and pass a demanding
“pre-test” before being invited to test for the rank of Black Belt. If chosen to test, the student must
pass a written examination on Tang Soo Do terminology and techniques. If they pass this written
examination, the candidate then proceeds to the physical test. The candidate must not only be in top
physical condition in order to complete and pass the grueling physical testing procedure, but must
perform Tang Soo Do forms and techniques with precision and total accuracy.
These are the qualities and characteristics that are required to begin teaching the “Future Black
Belts” of Tang Soo Do. We expect and demand the very best from our instructors, because you
expect and demand the very same thing! This is why you and your family will receive the highest
caliber of training at EAST MISSISSIPPI TANG SOO DO. Because there is no substitution for skill,
